Masterclasses for Future Leaders

Oxbridge Tutorial College is working with Insight Education to pilot the first Oxbridge Summer School (OSS) in Lagos from 3 to 8 August 2015. Students interested in attending the OSS will be able to select one of four masterclasses offered: Biology and Chemistry in preparation for science or medicine at university; mathematics and Physics for university engineering studies; English Literature and History for law studies and politics, philosophy and economics (PPE) in preparation for the same university course. Masterclasses will be run by young Oxford and Cambridge graduates and will give pupils a feel for what it would be like to study their favourite subject at university.  Teachers will introduce university level concepts in a meaningful way, using non-technical language to ensure understanding of final year GCSE and A level students.  Serious learning AND fun will be had by all, in an exploratory learning environment.  Mid-way through the week, there will be an excursion to Lekki Conservation Centre so that teachers can use the natural environment to enhance the learning and understanding of their students for their masterclass subjects. The overall aim of the Summer School is to raise aspirations among Nigerian students and increase the application and acceptance rates among these students to Oxford and Cambridge universities and the other top UK institutions.  More fundamentally, it aims to encourage students to think critically about their subject and the world about them, develop informed opinions, undertake creative problem-solving and begin the process of development into tomorrow’s leaders. Access to top UK universities

We at Insight Education are working with Oxbridge Tutorial College (OTC) to improve access for Nigeria to the UK’s top universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. Alongside improving A-Level grades by working with students at OTC, we are also offering parents at its feeder schools in Lagos help with improving students’ IGCSE grades. By doing so, we aim to help students achieve the best position to unlock the doors to top UK universities. Our Oxbridge Mentoring Scheme broadens and deepens students’ subject knowledge beyond the A-level curriculum, teaches critical thinking skills and helps them write the highest calibre UCAS personal statements. It also provides frameworks for tackling Oxbridge-style questions so students can gain the confidence to face any interview scenario. Of the OMS students who were called for Oxbridge interviews between 2006 and 2014, approximately 52% secured offers, far higher than the average Oxbridge application success rate of approximately 20% (2014 Oxford and Cambridge application statistics). Those students that don’t get called to interviews at Oxford or Cambridge go on to secure places at other top UK universities such as the London School of Economics, King’s College and Imperial College by virtue of the standards of their UCAS personal statements. For a taste of university level tutoring, parents can send their children to the Oxbridge Summer School (3-8 August at OTC). Graduates from Oxford and Cambridge universities will cover a range of topics to inspire student learning in a fun environment, help them bridge the study skills gap between A-level and university courses and provide OMS activities such as UCAS brainstorming and mock academic interviews.
