Masterclasses for Future Leaders

black-children-white-teacherOxbridge Tutorial College is working with Insight Education to pilot the first Oxbridge Summer School (OSS) in Lagos from 3 to 8 August 2015. Students interested in attending the OSS will be able to select one of four masterclasses offered: Biology and Chemistry in preparation for science or medicine at university; mathematics and Physics for university engineering studies; English Literature and History for law studies and politics, philosophy and economics (PPE) in preparation for the same university course.

Masterclasses will be run by young Oxford and Cambridge graduates and will give pupils a feel for what it would be like to study their favourite subject at university.  Teachers will introduce university level concepts in a meaningful way, using non-technical language to ensure understanding of final year GCSE and A level students.  Serious learning AND fun will be had by all, in an exploratory learning environment.  Mid-way through the week, there will be an excursion to Lekki Conservation Centre so that teachers can use the natural environment to enhance the learning and understanding of their students for their masterclass subjects.

The overall aim of the Summer School is to raise aspirations among Nigerian students and increase the application and acceptance rates among these students to Oxford and Cambridge universities and the other top UK institutions.  More fundamentally, it aims to encourage students to think critically about their subject and the world about them, develop informed opinions, undertake creative problem-solving and begin the process of development into tomorrow’s leaders.
