Nick Waite of Bellerbys College Cambridge visits Oxbridge

Mr. Nick Waite, principal of Bellerbys College Cambridge, made a much appreciated visit to Oxbridge Tutorial College last week. The relationship between Oxbridge and Bellerbys kicked of in 2013 when we recognised the difficulty faced by many local students wanting to gain admission to the top medical schools in the UK. As a home student in the UK bagging one of these coveted spots is a difficult task. Multiply that ten fold if you’re an international student! Having identified Bellerbys as a premium institution with similar goals and objectives as Oxbridge we created the first of our Medical Pathway programmes (MP1) aimed at the strongest and brightest students. (This has recently been complemented with our Medical Pathway 2 programme, in collaboration with DIFC in Ireland, offering students with more varied abilities the opportunity to study medicine in a broader range of institutions). On the day, Mr. Waite, along with two members of their local team (Mrs. Yetunde Perraire and Mrs. Adedayo), took part in our Valedictory Service followed by a session with our MP1 students and some of their parents. Mr Waite took the time to speak to his audience about: The UCAS Personal Statement. The Job Shadow scheme. The UKCAT and BMAT tests. Extra curricular activities at Bellerbys. Application choices. Scholarship offers. For intending Medical students, Mr Waite elaborated on how the UCAS Personal Statement must be robust and must showcase other sterling qualities and achievements of the students with work placement activities. What’s next for the MP1 students? They’ve got a 2 week work placement at The Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton at the end of the summer! It’s going to be a very...

Oxbridge Open Day

The college once again, on the 21st of March 2015, opened its doors to welcome visitors to its Open Day. The event which runs throughout the year has always provided ample opportunity for guests to have a first-hand acquaintance with the unique educational services the college offers. From the College Reception, guests were ushered to the College Hall, where the Principal of the college, Ms. Carol Scott gave a presentation on the different exciting, educational opportunities our students enjoy. Prior to this the Managing Director of the college,  Dr. (Mrs) C.O Ogunsanya, who graced the occasion, gave an opening speech on the unique pedigree of the college by virtue of it being the pioneer of the A ‘Level programme in Nigeria. The visitors made up mostly of parents, had the opportunity to ask questions and to be educated on the different admission/education options offered during and after Oxbridge education. One such option was the Oxbridge Academy offering the International Diploma Programme (Equivalent to year 1 of UK university). Intermittently, visitors were taken around on a tour of the facilities of the college, including seeing classrooms where lectures were going on.  The event commenced at 10am and ended at about 2pm, with satisfaction written on the faces of those that had taken part in an educational exploratory experience. Didn’t manage to make the open day? Don’t worry! You can still schedule a visit to the college at your own convenience by calling 08021332170 and...

What is an OPEN DAY?

What is an OPEN DAY? A day when members of the public can visit a place or institution to which they do not usually have access. Why go to a School Open Day? Making a decision about which school to send your child to or attend is not an easy one and should not be taken lightly. Generally it’s a good idea to do plenty of research before you decide on which institution will suit you or your child best. Visit the website or Facebook page, read the blog, ask people around you. The most effective way to do this is in person at an Open or Taster Day. Why? Let’s take a look at the main advantages. PROGRAMMES You may already know which programme you want and an open day can give you the opportunity to speak to the teachers and gain more information on what the programme offers. If you are undecided which route to take (Foundation or A Level for example), you can gain a better understanding on which is best suited to you or your child and what will be achieved at the end of it. Ask about the structure of the programme – what are the compulsory components? Do they offer the units that will get you into the university you want? Facilities Attending a school is not just about choosing the right programme to suit you or your child, it is also important to find out about the facilities on offer. These include the library, the communal facilities and the student residences. The Open Day is the ideal way to explore a range of schools and what they have to offer, so you know they are catering for you or your child before you...

University ranking on LinkedIn

Very intriguing development! LinkedIn has released a unique university ranking tool. Their website reads: Rankings based on the career paths of LinkedIn members Which schools are best at launching graduates into desirable jobs? We analyzed millions of alumni profiles to find out how schools around the world stack up across a variety of careers. For example, here’s how we found the top schools for software developers:  First, we identified the top companies where software developers are choosing to work.  Next, we found people on LinkedIn who work as software developers and saw where they went to school. Finally, for each school, we found the percentage of these alumni who’ve landed software development jobs at these top companies, then compared the percentages to come up with the...
